General

 

  • When is the library open?

               The Lyman Beecher Brooks Library’s hours are posted on the library’s homepage

                       

Monday – Thursday      8:00 a.m.  - 11:00 p.m.

                Friday              8:00 a.m.   -   5:00 p.m.

                Saturday          9:00 a.m.   -   5:00 p.m.

                Sunday             2:00 p.m.   -  9:00 p.m.

                Summer and Holiday hours will be posted.

 

  • What printing services are available to me in the library?

               Printing services are available in the Computer Research Area on the second floor

 

  • Where can I make photocopies?

Photo copy machines are located on the first and second floors of the LBB Library. All copies cost $.10 per page

 

  • Where can I find Microform readers/printers?

Microform readers/printers are located only on the second floor of the LBB Library. Copies are $0.10 per page

 

  • Where is the change machine located?

The change machine is located on the first floor near the circulation desk. The machine will only give change for one or five dollar bills.

 

  • What is a Faculty Search Request Form?

A Faculty Search Request Form is filled out by a faculty member requesting a specific research request. Faculty Request forms can be found on the library webpage in the left field.  Simply click General Information or by contact the Information Services Department at 757.823.8517.

 

  • Where can I print my term paper saved in word?

The computers in the Open Access Lab located on the second floor of the Library will allow you to use and print from Word and other applications.

 

  • Where are quiet study rooms located?

 Quiet study rooms are located on the second and third floors of the library.  The rooms are available on a first come basis.  Each room will hold 1-5 people.

 

  • Can I access the Internet in this library?

Internet access is provided to students on all computers throughout the library.

 

  • Is there a public telephone in the library?

A public telephone is located on the second floor adjacent to the academic computing lab

     

  • How do I request that the library purchase materials for the library collection?

Requests can be received by faculty, staff and students throughout the year and order request cards are available in the Collection Management Department (LBB 121), at the Circulation Desk or requests can be sent electronically. To access a form electronically go to the library webpage and click on General Information to retrieve the order request form.

       

      

 

 

 

 

Circulation/Reserve

 

  • How do I locate a book?

Books are located by using the online catalog.  Whether you need to find a specific book title, books by a particular author, or subject related books, the online catalog will assist you in the location and availability. You will need the call number to locate the book on the shelf.

 

  • Who can check out books?

All NSU students, staff and faculty can check out books from the library with their current ID card. Community residents with proper identification may check out books.

 

  • How do I check out library materials?

You must go to the Circulation Desk located on the 1st floor. You will need a current NSU ID card to check out library materials.

 

  • How do I obtain a library card?

You must have a current NSU ID card. An NSU ID card will be issued to you at the Spartan station. To register at the library you will need to have a library barcode attached to your ID card.

 

  • Can I borrow materials, if I am not a Norfolk State University student, faculty, or staff person?

If you are not a Norfolk State University student, faculty or staff person you can obtain a community card. Or, if you are a current student, faculty or staff person at a Virginia Tidewater Consortium (VTC) school, you may obtain a consortium card from your home institution.  Please inquire on the first floor at the Circulation/Reserve desk. 757.823.2418.

 

  • Where are the books that can be checked out?

The Circulating Collection is located on the third floor of the LBB Library. The Herbert A. Marshall Collection is located on the first floor.

 

  • Where do you keep the new books?

Display shelves on the first floor by the Circulation Desk have many of the new books. Others are shelved in the circulating stacks on the third floor. You may also find a list of new books on the online catalog.

 

  • How do I renew a book?

You may renew a book in person, online or by telephone. If your book is overdue you can not renew a book until your fine is paid.

 

  • How can I find out what I have checked out?

You can find out what you have checked out by going to the library webpage and click on my NSU library record or you can go to the Circulation Desk to obtain this information.

 

  • What if a book that I want says it is available, but it is not on the shelf?
  • If a book or item is not on the shelf ask a library staff for assistance.  The item could be mis-shelved or in processing.

 

  • Where do I find reserve items?

Reserve items are located behind the Circulation/Reserve desk. For more information check the online catalog for Course Reserves and Course Reserves by Professor.

 

  • How do I access Electronic Reserves?

Electronic Reserves can be accessed via the online catalog.

 

  • How do I check out reserve items?

Reference

 

  • Where are Reference books located?

The Reference books are located on the second floor of the LBB Library.  Reference materials may not be checked out.  Reference materials include indexes, abstracts, encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and handbooks

 

  • How do I know if a journal is in hard copy (paper) or microform (microfiche or microfilm)?

The Periodical Holdings List will indicate if a journal is in paper or microform. Paper issues of titles are identified as current titles and older issues are identified as bound titles.

 

  • How do I find out if this library has a specific journal?

The LBB library has journals in print, microform and electronic formats.  To find out if the library has a specific journal check the LBB Online Catalog.

 

  • How do I find articles for my research?

Choose and use the appropriate database or index to identify full text, citations and abstracts for articles on a particular subject and search the library’s index databases. To access go to the library webpage and click databases A-Z.

 

  • How do I find articles for my research?

If you have a topic that you need to research contact the Information Services Desk at 757.823.8517.

 

  • What is a peer reviewed journal?

Peer reviewed journals contain articles that are examined by experts in the field to determine their merit. They are scholarly in nature, but may also be trade journals and reviewed by people who work in a particular field.

 

  • What is a refereed journal?

A refereed journal is another name for a peer reviewed journal.

 

  • What is a scholarly journal?

Professional and scholarly journals are used within an area of academic research or study.  It is written by and for scholars in the field.

 

  • How do I cite resources using MLA, APA, etc?

The library has guides and books available for citing resources.  You may also go to the Virginia Tidewater Consortium website and click on doing research and you will be directed to a variety of style manuals.

 

 

Interlibrary Loan

 

  • What is Interlibrary Loan

 

Interlibrary Loan is a service that allows NSU users to borrow books or obtain copies of articles from libraries out of the area.  If NSU does not own the resource, it may be borrowed from another owner through a reciprocal borrowing agreement.  Articles or other materials that may be photocopied may also be obtained from other libraries.   http://www.nsu.library/interlibrary_loan.html

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Library Instruction

 

  • How do I arrange for a library instruction session for my class?

 

Faculty may schedule a library instruction session for their class by contacting Mrs. Mable Butts at 757. 823.2424. Classes may be scheduled Monday – Thursday, between the hours of  8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Evening hours are limited to the availability of a library instructor Monday – Thursday.  Library sessions are not available on Fridays. To ensure confirmation of the library Instruction date that you would like, we ask that you schedule at least one week in advance.

 

  • What types of Library Instruction classes are offered?

 

Library Instruction classes are offered for library tours, library orientation, library literacy, and bibliographic instruction.

 

 

Distance learners/Virginia Beach Higher Education Center
